Psychological, Legal, and Developmental Safeguards Before Marriage and Parenthood >> & Part VI: Financial Modeling of Unpaid Household Contributions >>

Author’s Note: Context & Intent

Before continuing, it is important to provide some personal context for readers. Although I am attracted to men and women, my relationship experience to 'date' has been exclusively with men. In the event that I form a long-term partnership with a man, I anticipate that I may take on the role of the stay-at-home parent. This anticipated dynamic is one of the reasons I developed both this article and the accompanying relationship agreement template.

Long-term partnership, particularly when it involves shared finances, caregiving, and the possibility of raising children, requires the same level of foresight and structural protection that we routinely apply in professional or business contexts. Legal and psychological safeguards are not only practical, but necessary, to ensure fairness, accountability, and emotional safety for both partners.

I also know that I want to become a parent and be actively involved in my children’s care and development. Because of that, it is essential for me to approach these topics with the same depth of research, critical thinking, and thoroughness that I apply to any other area of study and interest.

IMPORTANT

This part of the article is under construction - I'me working on adding all the tables, sources, numbers and I will also share examples that've found to represent the points and roles and why I've described them in the way I've described them so far. You can check here once in a while - please remember that this is a blog and its not something I can work on on a daily basis for too long.

Part VI: Financial Modeling of Unpaid Household Contributions

This section attempts to translate the labor historically labeled as “unpaid” domestic work into real economic terms. The objective is not to romanticize sacrifice, nor to reduce caregiving to a transactional framework, but to establish clarity: when labor has economic value in the public market, it also carries economic value when performed privately.

The stay-at-home partner role—most frequently assumed by women—has been culturally framed as a natural extension of love, duty, or moral obligation. This framing has protected the illusion that this labor is costless. In reality, it represents the consolidation of multiple full-time professions into a single, uncompensated position.

Methodology & Data Integrity Disclaimer

Crucial Disclaimer on Research Scope and Data Integrity

This analysis constitutes self-made research and has not been subjected to formal peer review by external academic or economic institutions. The financial estimates presented are based exclusively on publicly available labor market data, collected from public sector records and salary databases such as ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, Salary.com, SalaryExpert, and Indeed.

These platforms do not utilize standardized methodologies—some report mean averages, others report medians, and others provide percentile bands. As a result of these structural inconsistencies and the reliance on public sources, the underlying data may be incomplete or incorrect, and the resulting figures should be interpreted as theoretical, proportional approximations, not as precise, verified valuations. The purpose is not to claim exact compensation equivalence, but to contextualize the scale of economic contribution represented by unpaid domestic labor.

Valuation Premise: High-Level Expertise and Variable Pay

The final valuations are presented across Minimum, Maximum, Average, and Median tiers to reflect the wide possible range of compensation. This range is necessary because not all domestic roles are given the same monetary value in the market.

Crucially, this financial model assumes the labor is performed at an exceptionally high, advanced level to capture the maximum potential economic contribution. For example, the education component is modeled at the level of 'Advanced Home Schooling,' performed by someone with experience, following a strict set of guidelines that extend beyond the basic requirements given by the state or government.

I’ve acknowledged that performance and contribution are not uniform: while the full framework currently identifies around 400 potential tasks performed by the stay-at-home partner, not all individuals behave or contribute in the same range. The economic value of the labor performed will differ significantly depending on the individual's existing literacy, online literacy, digital literacy, and skills or levels of knowledge within the required tasks.

Foundational Questions

A meaningful valuation of domestic labor requires first asking foundational questions that are rarely written down, yet socially assumed:

For the purposes of economic modeling, this analysis categorizes domestic labor into functional equivalents of market professions, including household maintenance, food services, garment and textile care, administrative coordination, emotional labor, transportation logistics, childcare, developmental education, and health and safety supervision. The full framework currently exceeds two hundred discrete task categories. The condensed list that follows represents only high-level groupings, not the totality of labor performed.

The Invisible Labor — A Functional Breakdown of Domestic and Care Roles

When attempting to quantify the true economic value of a stay-at-home partner—especially in romantic arrangements where one individual becomes the primary caregiver and household manager—the first intellectual barrier is categorical invisibility. Domestic work is often described generically (“cooking,” “cleaning,” “childcare”), but in practice, the stay-at-home partner performs the functional equivalents of multiple professional roles simultaneously, each with its own specialized tasks, skill sets, and market value.

To avoid presenting an abstract or sentimental estimate, this analysis reframes domestic and caregiving labor into professionally recognized job categories. These categories were constructed using the following criteria:

  1. The role must have clear labor market equivalents (e.g., Preschool Teacher, Child Development Specialist, School Placement Coordinator).
  2. The role must include task clusters that are routinely performed by stay-at-home parents but not reflected in traditional household chore lists.
  3. The role must require an identifiable skill set, comparable to what would be required in a paid professional setting.
  4. The inclusion of each role directly supports the developmental, emotional, educational, and logistical needs of children, especially in households with disabilities where emotional labor, coordination time, and cognitive load increase substantially.

These tiers anchor the financial analysis and prevent artificially inflated totals.

By presenting domestic labor through this multi-role occupational model, I am aiming to make this part of the do three things:

The following sections detail each role, its responsibilities, its specialized skills, and its position within the stay-at-home partner’s total economic contribution.

Based on currently available NYC labor market data, an estimated yearly market-equivalent value of this consolidated labor average ranges between:

Without Kids

Lower-End

Average: $106,946.62

Average/Mean

Average: $142,384.20

High-End

Average: $179,342.35

With Kids

Lower-End

Average: $152,780.88

Average/Mean

Average: $203,406.00

High-End

Average: $256,203.36

These figures represent blended approximations derived from multiple labor categories and should be interpreted as range indicators rather than fixed wages.

Each role was broken down into:

1

Expanded tasks

(beyond typical general responsibilities).

2

Skills required to perform those tasks effectively.

3

Market salary data

Collected across multiple sources (e.g., ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor, SalaryExpert, Salary.com, Indeed).

To preserve accuracy across inconsistent salary reporting (some reporting low vs. high ranges, some using 25th/75th percentile structures, others reporting median-only), all roles were standardized into three comparable market tiers.

Low-End

Conservative, low-market estimate

Average/Median

Typical-market estimate

High-End

Upper-market estimate

These tiers anchor the financial analysis and prevent artificially inflated totals.

By presenting domestic labor through this multi-role occupational model, the article does three things:

Reveals the complexity of stay-at-home labor

Showing it is not a single job but an integrated ecosystem of 10+ professions.

Makes the caregiving partner’s contribution legible

So it can be financially quantified, legally protected, and ethically negotiated in advance using tools like the Personal Partnership Charter (PPC).

Provides a realistic, evidence-based framework

For couples, mediators, therapists, and legal professionals to evaluate labor expectations before entering long-term commitments or becoming parents.

The following sections detail each role, its responsibilities, its specialized skills, and its position within the stay-at-home partner’s total economic contribution.
